Carving Elegance Out of Nature
It’s hard not to feel a little cramped and confined when you live in the concrete jungle that is Hong Kong. Situated in Pak Shek Kok, this apartment in The Horizon shared the same seaside location with Mayfair by The Sea but missed out on the stunning sea view accessible to its neighbours. However, our interior designer Jacky created a home that felt like an oasis in the middle of a crowded metropolis by drastically reinventing the layout and layering the two-room apartment with stylish material, lights, and decoration.
After several meetings and extensive conversations, Jacky learned that the current trend of Nordic minimalism did not interest the client, who was looking for a design that was more naturalistic and could stand the test of time. To achieve this, Jacky came up with the concept of an Urban Jungle. The design blended green plants with dark walnut floorboards, leather sofa, gold-tinted decoration, and marble elements into perfect harmony and emitted a naturalistic vibe that was full of elegance.
Balancing Functionality and Aesthetics
The beautiful pine green wall across from the open kitchen is the first thing you will notice upon entering the apartment. The wallpaper had a crumpled texture that brought a contrasting sense of modesty to the elegant design that surrounded it. As previously mentioned, the client wanted extra room for storage, and Jacky found a brilliant way to conjure the capacity. Aside from using cabinets, he also installed stylish hooks onto the wall next to the entrance. The pins were from Muuto’s Dot collection. They allowed the residents to hang their hats, umbrellas, and bags onto the wall and added extra depth to the visual style of the design.
The open kitchen consumed a lot of space in the living room. After sparing what was leftover to the essential furniture, the wall that extended across the kitchen and the living room was the only space to accommodate a new storage solution. A shoe cabinet, a TV stand, and a display case were all separate pieces of puzzles that must fit into one piece.
The shoe cabinet near the entrance was divided into an upper and a lower compartment with a vacuum in between. This open space was for the residents to put their keys, phones, and other accessories upon arriving home. The marble wall behind the TV had two troughs decorated with the same pine green wallpaper that occupied the entrance area. The edges of the wall had a gold-tinted finish, which added extra elegance to the overall design and the gold-toned ornament stand.
The floating shelf that extends just a tiny bit outward underneath the shoe cabinet is a graceful detail worth mentioning. This surface allowed the residents to sit while putting on their shoes and can be used to place a Christmas tree or Chinese New Year decorations during that time of the year.
Creating a Transparent Multifunctional Space
The clients wanted the apartment to feel vast, spacious, and without visual barriers. Our designer remodelled the room next to the parlour by pushing it deeper into the flat and adding black steel frame windows to its partition walls to answer their needs. This allowed for a transparent view from the living room and better lighting in both spaces.
This semi-open room is currently used as a study and for accommodating guests. It was small and compact and had room to take in a piano even after accommodating a desk and a sofa bed. The jet-black tone of the piano was complemented by a glass cabinet that hung above it. The room was further embellished with marble pendant lights from Tom Dixon that have a golden, metallic finish and ornaments that resonated with the metallic elements of the apartment’s overall design.
Moving Freely with Tonal Variety
To create variation in the atmosphere, the colour scheme of each space gradually becomes lighter as we progress from the living room to the study and then into the master bedroom. The linen texture wallpaper behind the bed was designed to be a clean canvas that made way for the 24K gold leaves décor to add a naturalistic beauty to the room.
The apartment had the luxury of a high ceiling. Jacky took advantage of this luxury by adding a raised platform to the bedroom that matched the windowsill height. Not only did this create more storage space for the client, but it also transformed the room’s windows into a floor-to-ceiling attraction. This intelligent design and a low headboard for the bed and low nightstands effectively gave the bedroom a light and airy, spacious feel.
